Took afternoon walk through the East St. Louis savannah area on the
riverfront north of the Casino Queen and King Bridge. Was hoping to see
WESTERN KINGBIRD or return of the PAINTED BUNTING. No sign of either. Best
birds were:
BELL'S VIREO
BALTIMORE ORIOLE
ORCHARD ORIOLE
GRAY CATBIRD
INDIGO BUNTING
WHITE-EYED VIREO
CAROLINA WREN
PALM WARBLER
Nice observation of Kentucky Derby Day at the family's horse farm in
Glen Carbon. My 7-yo niece wore a lovely hat that would have fit right in at
Churchill Downs, and the adults drank real mint juleps (I believe the first
time I've consumed Jack Daniels since "the incident" my freshman year at
University of Iowa). And Kentucky Fried Chicken for dinner afterward. Funny
Cide the first gelding to win the Derby since 1929. How would you like to be
the person who had made that decision? Considering that you've thrown away
an opportunity for a likely million-dollar stud fee charged to 40 or 50
mares a year, you might find yourself wishing you had emasculated yourself
instead. Good birding to all!
