Checked four Newton County Great Blue Heron heronries this am, 4-20-03. All four
are on private property.

Gooch site: Two nests and two GBH's. All 10 or 12 nests at this site blew out of
the sycamore tree in a fierce autumn storm in 2001. This site not used
                             last year.

Redings Mill site: Ten nests and eight GBH's.

Miller site: Eight nests and seven GBH's observed. These first three sites are all
along Shoal Creek, Newton County, sw of Joplin.

Loma Linda site: Fourteen nests but only two nests appeared active - and only two GBH's
observed. This site had a Great Horned Owl nest with them several years
ago. All nests at all four sites are in sycamore trees.

The Chick and Birdie Miller site was the most fun. Three Little Blue Herons, following the creek
above the trees, circled the heronry once as if to say hello to the GBH's and then continued west.

Good birding, Larry H. Joplin MO.
