AUDUBON SOCIETY DAY TRIP TO PINEKNOT AREA NEAR VAN BUREN

SATURDAY, APRIL 19

On Saturday, April 19, Ozark Rivers Audubon will sponsor a trip to beautiful
Carter County, near Van Buren, MO to visit the Pineknot Area on the Mark
Twain National Forest. The public is invited to join the group, led by Jody
Eberley, Wildlife Biologist with the Forest.

The Pineknot Area consists of about 11,000 acres of Mark Twain National
Forest land that is proposed for restoration of the Ozark's open pine
woodland natural community. The group will visit selected sites to
experience the bird life and talk about Missouri's shortleaf pine forests.
Bring binoculars, bird books, water and snacks if you like. Dress for
walking short distances into the woods. The bird watching trip should last
until about 11:00 am. Afterwards, you may want to experience some of the
unique and fabulous Ozark treasures nearby -- Big Spring at Van Buren, Greer
Spring down Highway 19, the Current or Eleven Point Rivers. Or enjoy lunch
at the Mercantile, Jolly Cone, Float Stream, or Big Springs restaurants in
Van Buren. There are several reasonable motels in Van Buren for those who
wish to drive down Friday night. The Landing is an excellent choice, with
rooms overlooking the Current River. The group will be meeting at the
junction of US Highway 60 and State Highway C about 5 miles west of Van
Buren at 7:00 am Saturday morning. Participants can stay in a hotel in Van
Buren Friday night, if desired. For more information, call Jody Eberley at
(573) 426-2906, or Mike Doyen at (573)341-5819.
