 Happy Easter
Hiked the Chubb Trail/Castlewood loop section of Castlewood SP this
morning. Its on the other side of the river from the main part of the park. The
beginning is at the entrance to Lone Elk Co Park. There is alot less trail
access, alot more habitat and alot more birds than the main part of the park..
The mind blowing find of the morning were the number of HENSLOWS SPARROWS i
came across while walking the large field(which can be seen from the
Castelwood bluff trail and is directly behind Tyson Research Ctr) along the
Castlewood Loop trail.I covered maybe half of this field and counted 14
individual birds by sight alone.I could hear many more. Was able to get within
6 feet of a bird for pictures.Right now the field is perfect for these birds
with the grass going from ankle to maybe knee high at the highest. It doesnt
really get taller than this in this particular field so there is a good
chance they may nest.
If you want to see lots of Henslows hike the Chubb Trail from the Lone Elk
trailhead about a mile .cross over the tracks and you will see a sign for the
Castlewood loop Trail.Take this to your right.Walk for a few hundred yards
and the trail will open out into a large field.Walk to the eastern section of
the field. There is a demarcation line between the greener section and the
more fallow section of the field. The Henslows wee in the fallow section.
Lots of good birds to see on the hike down also-
