I think it should be noted that Gioia takes a very specific kind of line about
poetry, and that is going to affect his view.   As I have not read the review,
I am not in any way critiqueing or challenging it.  I am only pointing out
that he and Ricks may well be philosophically apart, and that may
influence his response.

Yes, and gioia who wrote the review is in today's NY Times.  There was an
article about a meeting of the 50 state poet laureates.
