I've not read a lot of Lawrence, and that long ago, but his and Leavis's
celebration of "life" I always found off-putting -- in fact it was the
first thing that made me start backing off from my early admiration of
Leavis. It ("Life")is intellectually vacuous and morally offensive in
its implication that its user (Leavis, Lawrence, whoever) somehow is
more human than those who differ from him or her. It implicitly divides
humanity into two parts, one of which is superior to the other.
