It has been suggested that I go ahead and post this in a message to
MOBIRDS. It should look better on the ASM website, but here goes.

Waterfowl Identification Workshop
Bill Eddleman

Otter Slough Conservation Area

February 21, 22, 23

ASM members have continued to respond positively to the
identification workshops. Accordingly, the Missouri Bird Records Committee
would like to announce a Waterfowl Identification Workshop at Otter Slough
Conservation Area near Dexter in Stoddard County. Otter Slough is one of
the best areas in the state to observe waterfowl and other wetland birds
during migration and in winter when the water is open. The workshop will be
held February 21, 22, & 23.
The workshop will feature classroom discussion and field
identification. Because of the limited size of the area headquarters at
Otter Slough, the workshop will be limited to 50 people. There will be
ample time for field trips. Field trips will concentrate on keys to
identification of waterfowl and some other water birds, but trip leaders
will also provide tips for identification of all birds encountered. In
addition to Otter Slough, there are a number of other areas nearby that can
provide high quality field trips (Mingo National Wildlife Refuge and Duck
Creek Conservation Area (CA), Ten Mile Pond CA (Mississippi Co.), Crowley’s
Ridge CA). Those who attend may also want to schedule field trips to other
sites on Sunday afternoon following the workshop. Personnel at Otter Slough
have also agreed to assist with the workshop on Saturday.

The rough schedule of activities is:

Friday, 21 February
5-7 p.m.: Check-in at Super 8 or other motel. Informal birding at Otter
Slough CA. (Come earlier and bird in the area if you like)

Saturday, 22 February
8:30-9 a.m.: registration and breakfast at Otter Slough Area Headquarters
9-10:30 a.m.: general intro; molts and plumages of waterfowl; swans,
geese and
        dabbling ducks
   10:30-10:45 a.m.: break
10:45-noon: bay ducks, sea ducks, mergansers, duck look-alikes
noon-1:30 p.m.: lunch at Otter Slough Area Headquarters
   1:00-6:00 p.m.: field trips
6:00-8:00 p.m.: dinner; review and tally birds observed during the day
(Hickory Log Restaurant, Dexter)

Sunday, 23 February
8:30-9:30 a.m.: birding at Otter Slough, quick breakfast at Otter Slough
   9:30-9:45: break
   9:30-11 a.m.: field trips
11 a.m.-noon: Final tally of birds observed; meeting room at Super 8 Motel
1:00-4:00 p.m.: possible field trips on the way home

All times are tentative, and any changes before that weekend will
be posted to MOBIRDS.

All available lodging is in Dexter, Missouri (about 10 miles from
Otter Slough). The “official” motel is the Super 8 in Dexter. Two
additional hotels are available, although the Oak Tree Inn can apparently
be a bit noisy.

Meals will be provided at extra cost, if you desire. There are also cafés
and restaurants in Dexter, or you can provide your own food, but there are
no cooking facilities at the Conservation Area. Saturday dinner is a buffet
meal at the Hickory Log Restaurant in Dexter. This restaurant has been
locally well-known for its barbequed ribs since 1953. The buffet at the
Hickory Log includes: drinks (coffee, soda, tea), ribs, sirloin of beef,
baked potatoes, baked beans, slaw, relish tray, and dessert (cobbler).

Please indicate which meals you want on the enclosed registration form.
These will be provided at the following rates:

Saturday, February 22: Breakfast (rolls & drinks) - $3 per person
                         Lunch - $5 per person
Dinner - $12.30 per person (includes tax and gratuity)

Sunday, February 23: Breakfast (rolls and drinks) - $3 per person

If you have any questions about the workshop, please feel free to contact:

Bill Eddleman: 573-651-2364 (W); 573-335-1507 (H); [log in to unmask]

The Missouri Bird Records Committee appreciates the interest in
these workshops and wants to continue to provide them, with the approval of
the ASM officers and Board of Directors. It benefits us all if the
membership becomes better birders and spends more time in the field. If you
have suggestions for future workshops, please let me or one of the ASM
officers know.
