What started off as a discussion of Canada Goose
subspecies has veered off in the direction of discussing whether so-called
"nuisance" geese that populate public parks and golf courses should be culled by
managed hunting, egg oiling or whatever. There exists within the national
birding community a sort of birding counterpart of the NRA, which
automatically opposes any suggestion that wild birds ever need to be
"controlled" with the same vigor that the NRA opposes any sort of gun
control. For example, I have seen flame wars on other listservs
about efforts to control blackbirds and cowbirds.
I am proud to see that both sides of the issue of
controlling Canada Geese have been discussed on this Missouri listserv in a calm
and rational manner, with nary a sign that anyone is upset that someone else
might have a different viewpoint on the subject.
It really is a subject on which reasonable people
can disagree -- reasonably.
