Hi Kristi - it seems to me the ducks have been missing this whole fall, I just haven't seen the numbers and variety I usually do.  Kathy Lewis and I saw one short-eared owl on McComas Rd last Monday evening.  We stopped and talked to John, the man that lives in the log home there.  He usually comes out to talk but has had a heart attack and is recovering from surgery.  He had not seen any yet, but said he hadn't been able to get out at all.  We did find one that evening.   Later,  JF

Sixteen people braved the remarkably quiet environment around Trimble, MO (including Smithville Lake) Saturday. The theme for the day was not the number of "good" birds being tallied, but instead the number of missing birds.

Only 8 species of waterfowl were located. American Robins were in short supply with a grand total of 1 for the day. Grebes were mostly absent, with only 1 Pied-billed Grebe making it onto the tally sheet. House Finch (109) and American Goldfinch (213) were the only finches recorded. At lunch, all parties noted the complete absence of Northern Harriers, but two parties finally located a total of 5 Harriers by the end of the day. The Short-eared Owls apparently have not yet arrived at McComas Road.

We had a total of 75 species, with 185,457 individuals (174,596 of those being Snow Geese).

Best birds were:

Common Loon (1)
American White Pelican (2)
Winter Wren (3)
American Pipit (4)
Spotted Towhee (1)

Thanks to everyone who participated!

Kristi Mayo
