The winter flock at the UMC horse farm has been there for at least the past three years. They are very noticeable as they roost and call in the large trees between the UMC and USGS properties. Numbers have fluctuated from year to year, but I don't think I've ever seen as many as 1000. The numbers seem to peak about this time of the year and tend to taper off as the winter progresses -- they may even leave during the coldest part of the winter. I, too, am curious about where they nest.

The flock of great-tailed grackles is growing. At one time Tuesday morning, there was a flock numbering near 1000 at the UMC Horse farm on New Haven Road. It is the largest flock I have seen to date. Today is turning out to be a good birding day also. From my office window (which faces the horse farm) I have seen northern harriers, an unidentified accipiter, great-tailed grackles, horned larks, juncos, and the best looks at western meadowlarks I have ever had. There were 30+ meadowlarks in the pasture, and I identified 6 as western. Two of the western meadowlarks were less than 25 from my window!
