About ten days ago, David Castaner forwarded pix of
a duck he photographed 11/16/02 in a canal near Shoreline Drive in Alameda
County, CA just south of the south shore shopping center. A photo of the duck is

According to David Castaner, the duck was diving in
association with goldeneye, scaup, ruddies, a coot and a Redhead. David Castaner
" It's head was dark but when the sun struck it, it
was clearly green. At times, the back of the head showed stiff
feathers suggestive of a merganser's crest."
I have shared photos of the Mystery Duck with
subscribers to the Missouri listerv who could open my attachments and with a few
other birders. ID guesses so far have included the following hybrid
possibilities: Common Goldeneye X Hooded Merganser; Bufflehead X Hooded
Merganser; Common Goldeneye X Ruddy Duck; Bufflehead X Ruddy Duck and even
combinations involving Barrow's Goldeneye and Tufted Duck. Robert Mangile's
website also provides links to examples of some of these other combinations
(none of which looks like the instant bird). But amazingly, one person who saw
the pictures, said he saw a similar duck at Lake Mozingo in Missouri just
