Dear List Members, There have been a number of rather good photos sent as attachments to this list by some good photographers recently. Although the list software is capable of sending these the policy of not allowing these has not changed as has been discussed previously on the list. As you will see these are mostly technical concerns and concern those subscribers with a minimal type email account. Remember this list is for ALL members of the list no matter how fast or slow their downloads or size of their email account. The reasons for this are as follows: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Attachments increase the size of the messages quite drastically. For people accessing their email accounts using a modem download times increase dramatically. For people with limited disk space for email accounts they fill up a lot faster and if full when the message with the attachment arrives will not see it because the email provider will return to sender the message ststing that the addressee's mailbox is over quota. We then get into discussions about formats and if recipients have the correct software to read the attached file. Remember not everyone on this list is a computer whizz and discussions of computing usage are not suitable for this list. Some ISP's set limits to the size of incoming emails and others just plain refuse messages with attachments for security reasons. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The policy for the list, due to the above concerns , are as follows: 1 Send a message to the list discussing the subject in the attachment 2a State in the message if you are willing to send the file to interested parties if they contact you OFFLIST 2b Alternatively state the URL (web site address) where the image can be freely accessed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Due to the sudden surge in photo attachments sent to this discussion list and the fact that above policy and reasons for it have been stated previously I have now set the list to refuse messages with attachments. Since the original posting (when saved to disk was 1.3 Mb in size) the number of list messages bounced back to the me because of full mail boxes has increased significantly. One ISP has set a limit of 5 kb on messages and that affects 10 members at least. Another ISP refuses emails with attachments altogether. Searching for a better solution Regards Chris Snook, MObirds-L owner Columbia. __________________________________________________ * Audubon Society of Missouri's * * Wild Bird Discussion Forum * *------------------------------------------------* * To unsubscribe send the message * * SIGNOFF MOBIRDS-L * * to [log in to unmask] * * To subscribe send the message * * SUBSCRIBE MOBIRDS-L your name * * to [log in to unmask] * *------------------------------------------------* * To access the list archives from July 2002 on: * * http://po.missouri.edu/archives/mobirds-l.html * ##################################################
