This is a reminder for the ASM sponsored birding day at Smithville hosted by the Burroughs Audubon Society on Saturday, December 7, 2002.  All are welcome to join us for a day of birding and fellowship.
 
Below is a reprint of the original message.  Be sure, if you are coming from across the state, to make your hotel reservations in advance and BIRDERS BEWARE --THERE IS ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN SMITHVILLE.  Hwy 169 for 2-3 miles is under construction.  They re widening the highway and maneurering through this will take a little time.  Look forward to seeing you in December.
 
ASM is sponsoring a State Birding Day to be held on Saturday, December 7, 2002 at Smithville Lake, Clay County, Missouri.  Jim and Ellen Zellmer of Burroughs Audubon Society in the Greater Kansas City area are hosting this all-day birding event.  
 
Meeting time will be at 8:00 a.m. at the Litton Visitor's Center located on DD Highway just east of the dam.  We will meet in the parking lot.  This field trip will cover all waterfowl that can be expected at this time (i.e., loons, grebes, ducks, geese, scoters).  If time permits, we will also cover the north portion of Smithville Lake which will include sparrows, finches and possibly short-eared owls in the late afternoon.
 
For those coming from a distance, there are motel accommodations both in Smithville and in Kearney, MO.  Listed below are some of the motels along with the phone numbers.  Prices on average will run $45-$60/night for 1-2 occupancy.  Call for further details and to make your reservations.
