I had a chance to spend 15 minutes at Jacomo today.
Later, I went to Smithville and spent about an hour there just before
At Jacomo, I found 42 Greater Scaup, several
Redheads and 1 Horned Grebe at the South Boat Dock. I found sailboats in the
area where we sometimes see good birds from the North Boat Dock. I did not have
time for Liggett Cove or Blue Springs Lake.
At Smithville, I found all three mergansers, two
flocks of Shovelers , a small raft of Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead and Ruddy Ducks,
a few Gadwall and quite a few Mallards. The loons, grebes and Franklins Gulls
that were evident on previous trips were gone. Except for the Shovelers, and the
absence of Goldeneye and male Common Mergansers, it was an
early December array of waterfowl.
Is it over? I suspect much of it is. However, as
the lakes up north freeze, a lot more Mallards, Common Mergs, Goldeneye
and Snow Geese, plus perhaps a few more goodies, should come
