This is the 9:40 p.m. Thursday, November 7, 2002, Missouri Bird Alert, a
statewide service of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the
birding community of Missouri since 1901. The bird alert is compiled
from reports submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout the
state.

The first state record Calliope Hummingbird at Columbia (see 6:30 bird
alert) has taken the limelight, but there are several other birds in the
state worthy of attention. The following is far from a comprehensive
list of outstanding birds in our midst, but does give some of the more
noteworthy species.

From the Lake Contrary area (Buchanan Co.) today (November 7) comes the
report from Larry Lade that among birds seen were 1 LAUGHING GULL, 20
SPRAGUE’S PIPITS (in a harvested bean field west of Mud Lake), and 200
LAPLAND LONGSPURS in a harvested and disked corn field north of
Horseshoe Lake, and 20 Brewer’s Blackbirds around Mud Lake.

Smithville Reservoir, Clay Co., was checked by Bob Fisher today. Among
his finds were 2 WESTERN GREBES, 9-10 Common Loons, 7 Horned Grebes, 2
Eared Grebes, and one Greater Scaup.

At Riverlands Environmental Demonstration Area, St. Charles Co., Margy
Terpstra found 10 SURF SCOTERS in the channel.

The WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was not seen today at Little Creve Coeur Lake,
St. Louis Co. Two Common Loons were reported by John Solodar who noted
the PRAIRIE FALCON was not seen there today, either.
