Ozark Rivers Audubon Presents "SAVING MIGRANT BIRDS" by John Faaborg,
Ph.D.
Monday, November 11, 7:00 p.m. at the Rolla Visitors Center
Ozark Rivers Audubon will sponsor a presentation titled “Saving Migrant
Birds", by Dr. John Faaborg, Professor of Biological Sciences and a
specialist in avian ecology, behavior and conservation at University of
Missouri – Columbia.

 According to his website,
(http://www.snr.missouri.edu/fw/faculty/faaborg.htm), much of Dr. Faaborg’s
work can be classified as "island biogeography," an example of which would
include a stand of oak/hickory forest surrounded by Missouri farmland. Since
1972, he has been monitoring migrant birds in the Guanica Forest of Puerto
Rico. In Missouri, his studies have included the effects of forest
fragmentation on bird populations, including native grassland birds. Doctor
Faaborg is also involved in the Missouri Ozark Forest Ecosystem Project
(MOFEP), an ongoing study of the effect of timber harvest practices on
forest-interior birds.

In 1990 Partners in Flight, the world's largest bird conservation program
was begun in response to what appeared to be a serious decline in land bird
populations, and a loss of tropical habitats used by Neotropical migrants
(birds that breed in North America and winter in Central and South America).
Doctor Faaborg will discuss whether, in retrospect, the situation a little
over ten years ago was as desperate as perceived, and what we have learned
about the conservation of migrant birds in the past decade.

As always, the Audubon meeting will begin with “Bird Talk”. The presentation
is free and open to the public and will be held November 11, 7:00 p.m., at
the Rolla Visitors Center on Bridge School Rd. at Kingshighway.
Refreshments will be served. For more details, call 364-3339 or e-mail
