Thanks to recent posts by Larry Lade and some supplementary directions from him, we spent an entertaining day in the St. Joseph area, sandwiching visits to Horseshoe, Muskrat and Mud Lake areas with a 10 km Volksmarch that started at Krug Park.

Oxbow Lakes Area, south of St. Joseph, MO, 7:30-9:30am and 1:30-3:30pm, 19 October 2002.

Horseshoe Lake:  American White Pelican - 5, Killdeer - 8, Dunlin - 1, Wilson's Snipe - 1.

Muskrat Lake:  American White Pelican - 35+, Great Egret - 2, Snow Goose (Blue Morph) -1

Mud Lake Area: American White Pelican - 2, Double-Crested Cormorant - 1, Bald Eagle - 1, Northern Harrier - 3, American Kestrel - 1, Ring-Necked Pheasant - 1 female, Horned Lark - 2, American Pipit - 2, Clay-Colored Sparrow - 1, Vesper Sparrow - 2, Savannah Sparrow - 2, LeConte's Sparrow - 1, Nelson's Sharp-Tailed Sparrow - 1 (superb views, at times within 3-4 feet), Song Sparrow - 6, Lincoln's Sparrow - 8+, Swamp Sparrow - 25+, White-Throated Sparrow - 2, White-Crowned Sparrow - 1

Lake Contrary:  Wilson's Snipe - 1, Franklin's Gull - 8

St. Joseph:  Cedar Waxwing, Yellow-Rumped Warbler, Dark-Eyed Junco
