Well I spent time on
Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11-12, in Stone, Taney, and Christian counties while
attending a cousin's wedding at Silver Dollar City. I used free time between
family obligations to take Mother, then sister, on drives through the
countryside, giving ample opportunity for my own personal "serendipitous
happening" to occur. Unfortunately, it didn't. The Greater Roadrunner remains as
elusive as ever.
To add salt to my
wounds, the Black Vultures weren't to be found either in the early morning time
I had to be at the Shepard of the Hills Fish Hatchery and downstream from there.
I did see a few Ring-billed Gulls on Table Rock Lake but the winter time grebe
and loon population hadn't arrived yet either.
The only "bright
spot" was the fly-over Scissor-tailed Flycatcher just south of Nixa on 10/12/02,
seen in the pouring rain!
And now I read from
Cat and Jack Foster about birds streaming overhead along the Hwy 13 corridor ...
our route partway home ... which was rainy and quite devoid of birds late on
Saturday afternoon. SIGH. As they say, better luck another
