From: D.Gregory Griffith [mailto:[log in to unmask]]
Another name for Dionysus is Zagreus which can be translated as "a hunter
who catches living animals"--see Carl Karenyi's book Dionysus pages 81-3
for this quotation and the text in general for materials on D., the god, the
cult, the archeology and iconography, among other things. (Helpful with the
odd attributions of animal details with Sweeney's physiognomy?)
===========================================
One may wish to connect this twist with Percy Wyndham Lewis'
THE APES OF GOD, a wild and funky satire on the Sitwells & co.
The central character is Zagreus. Apeneck Sweeney may well
be a hanger on in that crowd, as well as a big poke in the face
of the evolutionists. Given Emerson's inexperience of
Sweeney's shadow, it might also be that Sweeney is the new and
different person of the future, designated as a TYRO by none
other than PWL.

Cheers,
Peter
