Another possible reason to is give universality to the poem and the feelings
expressed in it.  Eliot writes of this in "Tradition and the Individual
Talent" and in "Shakespeare and the Stoicism of Seneca."  It also shows up
in the Hesse essay "The Brothers Karamazov, or The Decline of Europe"
printed in "Blick ins Chaos."
