Hello. I am glad to see the TSElist up and running; in fact, I was surprised to
find that one had not been established a long time ago.
Now to explain the subject-line of this message: I am completing a chronology
of TSE in 1932-33, when he was Norton Professor at Harvard, and I am stumped
over a couple of things. (But first, I am aware that Ron Schuchard has gone
over some of the same ground; when the original of my article was in press, his
book came out, and this necessitated a complete overhaul of my work).
Among the things I need to know: Was IA Richards the Norton Professor in 1931?
He was at Harvard in 1931, but I'm unsure whether he took that chair.
What exactly did TSE do while in New York between about 17 and 27 April 1933?
Schuchard and I have come up with different results, mainly centered on what
TSE did at the New School for Social Research in Manhattan. Does anyone have
information on exactly what lectures (and/or readings) he gave in NYC?
Ackroyd has TSE lecturing (or reading) in Pasadena in January 1933, and
Schuchard has TSE in "St Paul, Chicago, Detroit and Buffalo" before returning
to Cambridge, thence to Baltimore and the Turnbull Lectures (Varieties of
Metaphysical Poetry 233) Harvard in January 1933. I have done quite a lot of
checking, and cannot find that TSE appeared in any of these places except
Buffalo...he did appear in Minneapolis, though...and he had to turn down an
invitation from the U of Chicago. It's possible that Schuchard was basing TSE's
itinerary on TSE's plans as stated in his correspondence(?).
Any help would be appreciated. I am delighted that we have a forum!
