Just awhile ago I was listening to a PBS radio show, Radio Lab, and they had a show on translation. The show started out with a talk with a man who solicited and collected translations of a cute poem in French. I like attempting to translate poems every now and then and it got me to thinking that maybe it would be fun to translate into English an Eliot poem already translated into some other language. For a couple of reasons I decided that I would give this a pass. But then I thought why not give Google a chance. I had found a recent full translation of The Waste Land into Spanish done by Jaume Andreu at http://www.literatura.us/idiomas/tse_tierra.html and I plugged that into Google Translate. I was rather impressed with the results.
