Viv's revenge for the the preceding lines in Part II?
Maybe it was something remembered from Kelland or Viv may have thought it was more in character.
Or that line could have been Vivien's (or TSE's) thoughts on the Eliot marriage but I can't remember seeing anything that either Eliot wanted children.
Just for kicks:
TSE's Stearns grandparents had 4 children
TSE's Eliot grandparents had 14 children (don't know how many may have died young)
TSE's parents had 7 children (1 died young)
but only TSE's sister Charlotte had children (2)
