These bits & pieces don't tell us much about the actual "etiquette" of a period. In the 1940s Emily Post instructed her readers that it was inappropriate to appear on the streets of NYC without a suit and tie. (I can't remember the last part accurately; she might have allowed or might have condemned a mere sports jacket. In any case, anyone who thinks here etiquette book was much of a guide to the New York streets would be badly mistaken.

P.S. I would be pleased if someone could check on this. The Emily Post text I remember was owned by my roommate in 1947-48.
