OCCRP is proud to announce the publication of The Prodigal Daughter, the first part of a large project on the first family of Uzbekistan.

OCCRP tracked down more than $1 billion that was paid by six major international telecom companies to companies controlled by Gulnara Karimova, the daughter of the President of Uzbekistan. The amount is of a magnitude that far exceeds anything being looked at in current investigations. The payments were clearly made shortly after Telecom companies including TeliaSonera, Vimpelcom, MTS and others were given licenses by Uzbek regulators. In many of the cases, these companies directly hired Gulnara for multimillion dollar "consulting" contracts specifically to help them gain licenses. But Karimova often demanded and got minority shares of companies that were sold back in "put" options that guaranteed her obscene profits. In some cases, without investing a penny, Karimova earned profits of more than $250 million in these deals. While Telecom companies say they were not bribing anyone, reading this story shows there is no way they could NOT know what was happening.

The work follows on the marvelous work of SVT and was coordinated and led by Miranda Patrucic along with reporting and assistance by Inge Springe (Re:Baltica), Fredrik Laurin (Sveriges Radio), Joachim Dyfvermark (SVT), Alisher Siddiq (RFERL), Farruh Yusufiy (RFERL), Lejla Camdzic (OCCRP), Dragana Peco (OCCRP), and Olesya Shmagun (OCCRP).
