Some UK poets laureate have grown to hate the role - eg Ted Hughes and Andrew Motion.
It's like putting an expert, gourmet/fine food chef in a role as a short order cook in some tawdry diner, with a crowd of customers baying for their standard boring, bland, deep fried fare.
