Maybe a little bit off topic, but I just like to share good news from
Slovenia. And to present successful case of cross-border journalistic
Former prime minister Janez Jansa was convicted to two years in prison
for bribery today.
Jansa was the main person in the Finnish investigative programme MOT:
Truth about Patria, produced by colleague Magnus Berglund in September
We collaborated cross-border and I published article simultaneously in
same hour in Slovenia.
Story was a game changer as Jansa's political party lost parliamentary
elections three weeks later, many politically appointed people in
police and prosecutor's office who blocked international criminal
investigation were replaced by professionals, what allowed further
investigation and prosecution.
Colleague Magnus is still criminally prosecuted by Slovene authorities
for defamation of former PM Jansa, who demanded also 1,5 million EUR
in damages in libel suit. Both of us were targets of many smearing
campaigns by Slovene media in recent years, there were also some
serious security concerns.
However, in Slovenia three men were convicted today. All were involved
in arms smuggling during UN embargo in former Yugoslavia in 1990's
what was investigated in book trilogy In the Name of the State.
Austrian middlemen was convicted at Vienna court to three years in
prison in April 2013. The Finnish trial against the defense contractor
management will start this summer in Finland.
As I know that main information about bribery were obtained and shared
by my colleague Magnus Berglund who also started this great
investigation I wish to congratulate him also in this way!
