Encyclopedia Articles (500-5000 wds) on German-American and Austrian-American Foodways Today.
I am looking for contributors for an encyclopedia on Ethnic American Food Today to be published by AltaMira Press, a division of Rowman & Littlefield Pubishers. Entries will be anywhere from 500 words to 5000 depending on the size of the ethnic population and their role within “American” foodways. Yes, I use the quotation marks to show the complexity of defining what is ethnic in a multicultural society.
Also, the focus is on conemporary ethnic food as well as on what and how members of these ethnic groups are actually eating. This includes adaptations of “American” foods and foodways patterns (shopping, preparation, preservation, meal system, etc.) as well as contexts for maintaining foodways traditions. Some ethnographic experience with the group is helpful, and personal experiences are valid data. Entries also include recipes.
Essays will be due June 15, 2013. Compensation is a small honorarium or a copy of the 2-volume encyclopedia.
If you are knowledgeable about a particular ethnic group and are interested in writing an entry, please contact me, and I will send more information. I am also open to suggestions about ethnic groups.
These are fun to write! They’re a great excuse to spend some time researching food and eating.
