CfP: GSNA-sponsored panel at the MLA in Seattle in 2012
Money, Money, Money: Debt and Speculation in the Literature of the Goethezeit
The Goethe Society will sponsor a panel on money, debt, and speculation in
the Goethezeit at the MLA conference in Seattle, January 5-8, 2012.
From Goethe’s condemnation of the “Assignaten” in Campagne in Frankreich
and the introduction of paper money in Faust II to Schiller’s chronic
financial woes and Lessing’s fascination with gambling and his
cash-strapped protagonists, financial matters play an important role in
many canonical and non-canonical works in the long eighteenth century. This
panel explores the representation and reality of debt, speculation,
investment strategies, and interest rates in German literature and culture
of the Goethezeit. Contributions on works by women writers are welcome.
