CFP: GERMANY AND IRAN – LITERATURE, FILM, HISTORY
GSA, September 22–25, 2011, in Louisville, Kentucky
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 5 February 2011
In early 2009, with the upcoming presidential elections in Iran and the
emergence of the so-called “Green Wave”, the political situation in Iran once
more gained worldwide attention. In Germany, thousands of Iranian-exiles
demonstrated against the leadership in Tehran, demanding new elections.
These demonstrations prompted the German press to reflect upon the situation
of Iranian expatriates in Germany. While the media consistently places the
cultural achievements of Iranian exiles at the forefront of their investigations,
the works of Iranian-German authors and filmmakers have so far largely been
marginalized within German studies.
Possible paper topics include, but are not limited to:
- Iranian-German authors
- Iranian-German filmmakers
- Iranian-German artists
- The history of the Iranian-exiles
- The representation of the “Assimilierungsweltmeister” (Jasmin Tabatabai)
from Iran in the German media
- The diversity/heterogeneity of the Iranian community in Germany
- German-Iranian relations
- Institutions such as the Deutsch-Iranische Handelskammer, the Deutsch-
iranische Gesellschaft etc.
Please send abstracts of 200-250 words and a short bio-blurb to Karolin
Machtans <[log in to unmask]> by 5 February 2011.
