experience; his sharp awareness of his own certain death informs the whole
poem. Ending the poem with Helen's elegy to Hektor confirms the great
breakthrough in the poem: that human ties need not be confined to blood
kinship: Priam's grief is the grief of Achilles own father. Achilles &
Hektor are doomed mortals together.
