Call for Papers
Eighteenth-Century Hierarchies
42nd Annual Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)
April 7-10, 2011
New Brunswick, NY – Hyatt New Brunswick
Host Institution: Rutgers University
During the eighteenth century, established hierarchies, not only of
social rank, but also of gender and literary genre, were called into
question. At the same time, there is a tendency in literature of this
period to reinstate these sorts of hierarchies, to reestablish clear
demarcations among social categories as well as between male and female
roles, and to create precise definitions of literary and artistic
genres. The panel will explore how various hierarchies are both
maintained and dismantled in German literature of the eighteenth century.
Please send 250-word abstracts to Eleanor ter Horst ([log in to unmask]).
