This assumption has become an idea that there are the "us" who truly know
the deep Christian (apparently almost scriptural) meaning of all of Eliot's
work (which never varies but is always an allegory with the same point) and
"them," everyone who says anything else--or, it seems, struggles with the
words and syntax as he wrote it.
