CFP: Germans Down Under: Aboriginal Fantasies
German Studies Association; Oakland, CA October 7-10, 2010
Although German fascination with so-called Naturvölker has received
considerable academic attention, most of this interest has been focused on
German intersections with the indigenous peoples of Africa and the Americas.
This panel seeks to widen the scope of scholarship to include the German
imag(in)ing of the aboriginal peoples of the Australian continent. We are
particularly interested in exploring the ways in which German images of
Aborigines dialog with German colonial fantasies, but we welcome proposals
from a wide spectrum of critical perspectives, such as:
* Aborigines in German film and literature
* Aborigine issues as covered by the German news media
* Australia & Aborigines in films by German "auteurs"
* German Aboriginal tourism
* German activism vis-à-vis Aboriginal political issues
* Aboriginal genocide & German genocide of Jews (e.g. Gary Foley, William
Cooper)
* German missionaries and Aboriginal populations in Australia (e.g. Carl
Strehlow)
* German new age music inspired by Australian Aboriginal music (e.g.
Martin Scherl)
Please send a 200-word abstract by Friday, Feb. 12, to Margit Grieb
