A belated thank you to Tom and CR.
I was in a rush Sunday morning and I didn't have enough time to check
out for myself the original wording of Eliot's footnote. I wanted to get
out my question on the original version before Tom may have had to return
a possibly borrowed copy of "Notes towards the Definition of Culture."
I have a paperback book "Christianity and Culture" (ISBN 0-15-617735-8)
with no date of publication mentioned in it. It does say that the
copyright was renewed in 1976 though so it post-dates that. The book is
a collection of Eliot's "The Idea of a Christian Society" and "Notes
towards the Definition of Culture" (in that order so page numbers for
"Notes" don't match Tom's).
Once I got the the original footnote (thanks CR) I was able to see that
in this book the original 1948 footnote was retained (without the 1962
version.) I would have expected it to be the other way around.
