CALL FOR PAPERS – Medieval/Early Modern
Thirty-Fourth Annual Conference of the German Studies Association
October 7-10, 2010
YMAGINA (Young Medievalist Germanists in North America, http://www.ymagina.org) is pleased to announce a call for papers for the following sessions at the 2010 GSA conference.
1. Aesthetics and Style in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period
Papers on all aspects of aesthetics and style in medieval German literature and other media; medieval theoretical, theological, and philosophical formulations and explorations of aesthetics; cultural and literary manifestations of style; social, religious, and literary determinations of style; genre and style; transgeneric and transmedial aspects of style.
2. Art in Literature – Literature in Art in Medieval and Early Modern Culture
Papers on the relationship between visual arts and literature in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era (both theoretical exploration and practical application); function of art and artistic creations in premodern literary works; ekphrasis; literature’s effect on premodern art and iconography; literature as source or inspiration for art and vice versa.
3. Suffering in Medieval and Early Modern Culture
Papers on cultural discourses on suffering and pain; physical vs. mental/spiritual suffering; suffering and love; suffering and religious passion; representation and iconography of suffering, pain, or torture; innocence and suffering.
We seek 15- to 20-minutes papers, in English or German. Please send an abstract (max. 250 words) and a brief CV that includes institutional affiliation by Friday, February 5th, 2010, to both of the following organizers (e-mail submissions only, please):
