The Upstate New York German Studies Colloquium: Übergänge/Transitions

The Upstate New York German Studies Colloquium seeks to provide a forum for conversation and exchange among scholars, teachers and others interested in German Studies and to foster collaboration among scholars, teachers and graduate students, programs, departments and institutions. One of the goals of the conference is to promote connections among those working in German Studies in upstate New York, but all submissions are welcome regardless of location. The conference will take place on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10, 2010 on the Binghamton University campus in Binghamton, New York. Panels will begin on Friday, followed by a keynote lecture on Friday evening. The conference will continue on Saturday morning and close with a lunch. Conference languages are English and German. 

The 2010 conference theme is “Übergänge/Transitions.” We invite the submission of abstracts and/or panels for all manner of work on the theme of “Übergänge/Transitions” in German Studies. Papers and panels might address cultural, curricular, institutional and/or linguistic transitions such as the following:

Transitional periods in German literature
“Transitional” Literatures: Austrian, Swiss or Turkish-German Literature
Transitions in German Cinema and its Reception
Memories of the GDR in Transition
Berlin in Transition
Changing Understandings of German Modernism
Transitions in German Historiography
Sixty Years of the FRG: Generational and Cultural Transitions
Transitions in our Understanding of DaF
Transitions in Scholarly Writing and Publication in German Studies
Dialekt and Hochdeutsch: Transitions Inside and Outside the Classroom
The Transition from the High School to the College German Classroom
Transitions from First to Second to Third Year in German Language Learning
Transitions between “Language” and “Culture” in the German Language Program
German Studies and Study Abroad
German Studies in the General Education Curriculum
Translation as a Transitional Mode
