This panel will discuss the European origins of modern stereotypes, both
positive and negative, of Native Americans. Of particular interest are
papers that investigate the modern resonance of eighteenth-century
explorers and missionaries’ eurocentric depictions of indigenous peoples
in the Americas. Papers in French and English are welcome.

especially welcome papers dealing with Native Encounters, actual or
imagined, as well as Native responses to visitors to or encroachments
upon their communities.
