Thank you Rachel.  I liked "Dear Possum" a lot and I particularly
loved the surprise at the end.

I've got to admit though that it put me on the track to find out if
Wyatt Earp really was laid to rest with his hat.  It didn't take long
to find the answer (check out the links.)

As you mentioned in your note to the poem, Earp is buried in a Jewish
cememtary at the town of Colma near San Francisco (or at least the
Jewish section of one.) At a mission in San Francisco that had one of
the few remaining graveyards in the city (if not the only one) I learned
that all the other dead people in the city were evicted long ago.  It
appears that the rent was much cheaper in Colma.

Wikipedia has:

   According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area
   of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2), all of it land. The town's 17 cemeteries
   comprise approximately 73% of the town's land area.

   Informally, as of December 2006, Colma had "1,500 aboveground residents
   ... and 1.5 million underground".

   Town motto: "It's great to be alive in Colma"
