From Book to Film – A workshop with Swiss filmmaker Walo Deuber
A two-day seminar, April 4 - 5, 2008
The University of Utah, Salt Lake City
The Dee Council at the University of Utah in cooperation with Pro
Helvetia and the Swiss Embassy in San Francisco invites scholars,
teachers, and advanced graduate students in Ph.D. programs at U.S. and
Canadian universities to participate in a two-day seminar (held in
English). The seminar will be conducted by Swiss filmmaker Dr. Walo
Deuber (Der Schwarze Tanner, Fading Traces (documentary), Ricordare Anna
(fiction)). Participants will learn the reflected use of film as a
medium for teaching literature, come to understand the different
aesthetic and technical conventions behind each medium, and be given the
necessary resources to guide their students to a sophisticated
understanding of what film can do with literature.
Dr. Deuber will screen and discuss his latest film Er, der Hut, sitzt
auf ihm, dem Kopf – Robert Walser-Geschichten (documentary-visual book),
a journey into a new, innovative form of visual story telling. Through
image and sound, this visual book proves that the newly discovered love
stories of the modernist author who died 50 years ago still produce a
profound impression on modern day audiences. Thanks to the voice of
Bruno Ganz (The Downfall), the acting by Anja Margoni and Florian Rummel
and the true-to-text direction by Walo Deuber, Walser's texts come to
life like never before.
Dr. Deuber has taught seminars in Europe and the United States and
teaches scriptwriting and drama at the HGKL (Hochschule für
Gestaltung+Kunst Luzern).
The seminar is free and open to the scholarly community, but
registration must be received by March 15, 2008. The University of Utah
will provide 5 travel stipends in the amount of $ 200 each for
qualifying graduate students from all languages. Informal requests
should be sent by e-mail to Prof. Karin Baumgartner, Department of
Languages and Literatures, University of Utah. E-mail:
