For the 2008 MLA Meeting in San Francisco, the G. E. Lessing Society will sponsor two panels.
For one panel, the topic is open. For the other panel, the topic planned is "Lessing's Orient." Possible foci might include: Lessing's near east, middle east, or far east; the east of east (as Heinz Politzer noted: Jerusalem signified 'east' for Germans. In that eastern city, Nathan tells Saladin of "ein[em] graue[n] Mann im Osten"... so what is 'east' of Jerusalem?); or any other 'east' or 'orient' in Lessing's works. Other approaches to exploring "Lessing's Orient" are warmly welcomed. Please submit abstracts no later than 1 March 2008 to BOTH Anthony Krupp: [log in to unmask] AND Steve Martinson: [log in to unmask] Email submission only.
Speakers must be members of the G. E. Lessing Society, or become members before October 2008.
