Interestingly, Eliot's own readings tend to be in monotone. My
department once hosted a group of Royal Shakespeare actors who performed
scenes but also came into classes. One came to my modern poetry class
and read TWL, doing all the voices. It was astonishing as a
performance, and the students realized it was alive. Since I have been
acting myself---obviously not remotely at such a level---I have realized
how much performance alters their reaction to poetry. Since Eliot wrote
dramatically (but did not seem very good at performance) it especially
matters with his work.

Thanks Rickard. A curious reading. I liked the second half best as he
started to sink into the character. At first it seemed rushed and pretty
much a monotone.
