Subject: CFP: Childhood Before Rousseau (9/15/05; ASECS, 3/30/06-4/2/06)
One or two speakers are sought for a panel on "Childhood Before Rousseau" at next year's ASECS meeting in Montreal. The 18th century, at least in German discourse, has been called "the pedagogical century," due in large part to reforms inspired by Rousseau's 1762 Emile. This panel seeks to explore European knowledges of childhood during the *first* half of the long 18th century. Works to be examined may include dictionaries, autobiographies, pediatric manuals, novels, philosophical works, et al. I anticipate having speakers on the British and German scenes, so proposals relating to Romance languages would be most welcome, but further British or German proposals will also be considered.
Expressions of interest or initial inquiries are welcome. Send abstracts as email text or as attachments to [log in to unmask] Deadline for abstracts: 15 September 2005.
P.S.: Please note that participants who read a paper at ASECS 2006 are
expected to be ASECS members by 1 December 2005.
