This is particularly brought out by the superb passage in Dante
that explicitly proclaims the opposite: that in which a man with his
throat cut & drifting down the river murmurs "Mary" with his last breath
and is saved, all his preceding years having been nothing, meaningless.

Who says?
You don't need to look to Dante for such examples.
Remember the good and bad thieves on the crosses beside Jesus?
You might look to Dante for the idea of how one inds up in heacven according
to how one has lived.
Then there is the apocatastasis heresy which belives (with Islam)
that in the end we ALL wind up in heaven, and hell folds its tent
and disappears.
