The text of Eliot's essay "The Preacher as Artist" is now available
online at my website. It was first published in the November 28, 1919
edition of the Athenaeum.
Eliot wrote this as a review of the book "Donne's Sermons. Selected
Passages, with an Essay by Logan Pearsall Smith" but, essentially, it
is an essay where he compares the sermons of John Donne to those of
Hugh Latimer and Lancelot Andrewes. There is also a brief comparison
of Donne's sermons to the Fire-Sermon of the Buddha.
We were discussing this essay on the TSE list awhile ago. At that
time Peter Montgomery supplied me the raw material for the webpage
(thanks again Peter) but since then I took my merry time converting
the text to HTML and CSS format.
