Oh for heaven's sake, Kate, where do you get your notions of "academia"?
We read newspapers, see tv, hear radio, and can be counted on to know
quite as much as others what most of America says in polls. You have no
special knowledge, and it is really tiresome to read this sort of absurd
stereotype of Professors--who, after all, spend their lives trying to
understand things. There IS no single typical professor, and it is just
ridiculous to keep reiterating this nonsense.

Kerry did great tonight. He could have been a touch warmer, but he did
great, all things considered. But, this List needs to understand
something, since
most of you seem isolated in Academia. One-Third of American voters
will vote
Republican no matter what. One-Third of American voters will vote
Democrat
no matter what. That leaves One-Third, but most of you don't understand
about
that last One-Third. That last One-Third thinks the war is Iraq was
probably
a mistake but believes that since we're now in it, we must now win it,
fix the
problems, bring them to democracy. That last one-third is against gay
marriage, but believes that everyone has the right to basic rights and
inheritance
rights, etc., and so is in favor of civil unions. That last One-Third is
against capital punishment but would allow exceptions in the cases of
mass murderers
of women and children. In other words, who will decide the election
will be
moderate, reasonable people, and that's probably how it should be.
Now, to the most important issue brewing this October, Rickard, here in
Florida, we are just beginning to breathe normally again. Now that the
hurricanes
have passed, are my nerves really going to be subjected yet once again
to
another World Series try? Yes, for all of you with no Massachusetts
background,
the Red Sox have indeed once again secured a playoff birth. Haven't I
been
through enough? And Pedro doesn't seem like he's up to it, either.
Regards,
Kate
