THE EROTICS OF NOSTALGIA
This panel seeks to explore issues of nostalgia in
contemporary literature and performance. What makes a
text (or author, or reader) nostalgic? How does
nostalgia function as a literary device, an ideology,
or as a symptom of our own time? In the bricolage of
twenty-first century culture, is our suseptability to
nostalgia, what Sventlana Boym termed "the repetition
of the unrepeatable, materialization of the
immaterial," part and parcel of the post-modern or a
wish for everything to be otherwise? And finally, how
can the "erotics of nostalgia"--the push and pull of
the prelapsarian in the present--be characterized?
Potential panelists are welcome to explore thematic
uses of nostalgia in a given text or to address the
theme of nostalgia more generally.
