"Exile and Animals: Contesting German Identity by Contesting Humanity."
Papers are sought that deal with exile and animals in German-language
literature and culture in relation to theories of exile. While the sense of
loss is an apparently unavoidable exile discourse, animals are often relegated
to a position of secondary importance as tropes and metaphors for identity
conflict. When placed in the foreground, how do animals in texts dealing with
exile contest identity from a position not necessarily ties to the discourse of
exile as loss? Can an exile discourse be applied, for instance, to Kafka’s
