From the New York Times magazine of last Sunday, in an
article describing the life and artistic development
of the photographer Diane Arbus comes the quote
'Arbus, shortly before her death, told her own class
of students, ''It was my teacher, Lisette Model, who
finally made it clear to me that the more specific you
are, the more general it'll be.'' '
This appears to me to be the same artistic sentiment
that Pound expresses in his review of Eliot and also
the source of Prufrock's failures in life. Arbus
learned from Model that the photographic capture of
the specific personality of the subject is a way of
making very general statements about the human
condition. Arbus’ photographs of nudists captured in
a very general way what it is to be human.
