One can't _not_ assume all sorts of things. The question is not whether
one makes assumptions but how conscious those assumptions are and how
explicitly one articulates them.
And of course only explicit assumptions can be questioned or held
tentatively. Spontaneous (or unconscious) assumptions are hidden from
critique (by oneself or others).
